    Agree with this. One of the other things that was addressed on one of the podcasts I listen to is if you absolutely MUST work with existing IP, pick poorly executed books that have good concepts or short stories. Look at movies like Blade Runner and Minority Report. By having to significantly expand on the short stories they're based on you don't run the risk of e.g. The Maze Runner series or Divergent series which are crap.
